Dr Thomas Chemmanam is an experienced Consultant Neurologist who has joined Hollywood Private Hospital, where he provides comprehensive neurological care to patients across Perth and the wider Western Australian community. He brings many years of specialist expertise in diagnosing, managing, and treating a broad range of neurological disorders. Dr Chemmanam is committed to delivering patient-centred care with an emphasis on timely assessment, clear communication, and collaborative management.
He welcomes referrals from general practitioners and medical colleagues for both acute and chronic neurological presentations. In addition to his private practice, Dr Chemmanam also holds a public hospital appointment at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He is fluent in English, Hindi, and Malayalam, allowing him to provide culturally sensitive care to a diverse patient population.
Special Interests
Dr Chemmanam’s clinical interests span the full spectrum of general neurology, with a particular focus on stroke and cerebrovascular disease. He has extensive experience in the assessment and management of complex stroke presentations, secondary prevention, and the long-term care of patients with cerebrovascular conditions. He is the head of stroke unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, which is the state stroke centre of excellence. Dr Chemmanam is involved in multiple international and local stroke research trials run through the stroke unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Perron Institute. He is also skilled in performing nerve conduction studies and electro-myography (EMG), for selected peripheral nerve and neuromuscular conditions. His broad expertise supports comprehensive neurological assessment and targeted diagnostic testing, facilitating accurate diagnosis and efficient patient care.
Background & Training
Dr Chemmanam completed his Doctor of Medicine (DM Neurology) at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in India in 2006. His medical career began with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Kottayam Medical College, MG University in 1995, followed by Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Christian Medical College Ludhiana, India (2000). Dr Chemmanam further pursued clinical stroke fellowships at Royal Melbourne Hospital (2008) and Box Hill Hospital, Melbourne (2009) before attaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP)
